What to do during and after a very upsetting meeting!

Here is a comment on a journal entry made by a “client” after a particularly agitating meeting: (Note the strategies suggested, as this applies to virtually every human on the planet.)

Probably true.  BUT while in the negative spiral do complete “stream of consciousness” writing, where you write down all that is going across your mind, including “this is a pain in the...to be writing all these details down” or any random thought that isn’t even related to it.  It’s remarkable what will come up, but they are all from the primitive mind’s concerns, which we want to know so that we can handle them and reassure the chimp. You should best be including reassuring and comforting talk to your primitive mind, as it is what is needed.  Things will come up at random, in chaos...but then we come back when not in an agitated state and look at it and go one level up to a bit more organization, but still pretty disorganized, and then come back again and organize it, until we are clear on the steps/pieces that comprised the negative spiral AND on the new steps/pieces that would comprise the ideal, wise system that would get our desired results instead of our undesired results (emotional mostly) from the other negative system (sequence of conversations, bodily reactions that impaired our functioning, etc.).

We are all “nuts” sometimes.  Our “sanity” is pretty much non-existent when we are in our primitive mind.  Your boss is in that state fairly often. But you are also in that state at times.  But your job, and I understate that it sounds impossible, is to recognize that you have very little control when your monster in your mind is rampaging - and that the only thing you can really do is not fight the monster but to sooth it down and return to a calm state.  Your job is to recognize any negative feeling and to immediately, in ALL cases, put yourself back into a resourceful, powerful state, always, ALWAYS, starting immediately with The Pause.  In the conversation with your boss, of course, your sense of peace would be constantly under bombardment, so you’d be left with little to do other than writing notes and doing deep breathing (which will offset, to some extent at least your “going nuts’ yourself.  A human should never just allow “unsanity” for anything beyond the minimum time to see it!
