GETTING OUT OF THE HALTT “STUPID” STATES...

GETTING OUT OF THE HALTT “STUPID” STATES...

The HALT strategy is a successful strategy for noting when you are in a dysfunctional state and need to get out of it!

In the linked article from this piece:

“HALT risk states: HALT stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired.

The model was first developed to help addicts in recovery see when they were most vulnerable to relapse. Since then, it's been useful for other people, too – both in the workplace, and in their personal lives.“

I would modify this to HALTT, to include when you are emotionally triggered.  At that point your chimp brain is running the show and the real you (your Higher Brain/Self) is not really present or operating well.

As with any of the other states, you cannot operate well while staying in them!!!!!!  DON’T STAY IN THEM ONE SECOND LONGER THAN NECESSARY!!!!

The way you shift is by using The Power Pause (stop, shift to well functioning operational mode by breathing/relaxing/movement, and then shifting to “what shall I do now? (solutions) mode” - the latter engages the higher brain.  The level of engagement will vary by how completely you have relaxed into the “safe mode” with deep relaxed breathing, fully oxygenated, fully relaxed muscles, perhaps movement enough to make your body feel alert and alive.  (The chimp brain gets the signal from such a state as being an indication that all is safe, since that is the state we are in when there is no threat.  And it calms down.).

When you use the power pause to write down what has actually occurred and then revisit it to go through the completed solving mode, such as totally correcting the misbelief that caused the triggering in the first place.

(You know when you haven’t completed the process or haven’t even addressed the issue enough, when the trigger keeps on happening.

For instance, if you have all of the philosophical and comforting mantras and sayings down, but you keep going into the “helpless, hopeless” mode when you make a mistake - you haven’t addressed the belief behind it, such as “I must criticize myself strongly to correct my behavior” or “I’m stupid! Incapable! A bad learner!  I’ve failed permanently! Something is just wrong or deficient in me!” Funny thing is, if you checked with other people who really know you, they would think differently! And that is an indication that you are misperceiving and misbelieving and need to attack and restructure that particular belief system (where several component beliefs are in it and need to be identified and resolved individually).

You would use one of the beliefs processing forms on my site and/or use The Program For Upgrading Beliefs… particularly probably starting with the ABCDEF Rational Analysis short form (for a starter).

I wish you great life changing results from this!
