One of the key perceptual, conceptual mistakes we make in life is to assume that there is some mysterious force in our mind that rules us. But all, and I mean all, ancient, tried and tested thought disciplines teach you this, which you've heard over and over again, but most likely not bought into: "You are not your thoughts/emotions. Thoughts are just thoughts. Feelings are just feelings."
But, then, we get this "urge" and feel compelled to react to it, as if the mind was the ruler. A huge, huge, wasteful mistake!
If you want to have true power in life, true mastery over your life, you must get out from under the belief that you are your mind or any of its components or that you are some persona, such as "inner child" or "victim". You must see who you are.
You can link to those from this overall piece: Disassociating With The Mind, Emotions, And Thoughts - Not Trite Or Small Or Ethereal, But Hugely Affecting. (Be sure to read the linked pages!)
I recommend that you fully understand this and master it. It is not difficult...and it is all doable!
Yours toward maximum personal power,
Keith
