Pete Carrol is the coach for the world champion Seattle Seahawks. Like John Wooden, he has a pyramid that shows the beliefs, rules, and philosophy that is behind his winning (see on the site:
Powerful Guiding Creed).Everyone on the planet has a "pyramid", and, as "Jason" has laid out, they look like the pyramid below. This "pyramid" is true for all of us.
But most pyramid's are by accident - and they are not well-constructed.
If you want a great life, you must fill each of these levels with "good stuff", that you've thought about, constructed, and/or copied from life-successful people or books. Note that, since level 2 and 3 are merely parts of the mechanics of how humans operate, that the fine attunement of beliefs is THE KEY to it all.
Please look again at the pyramid to "see" it's truth, then read the subsequent discussion.
Since we all want to "do well in life", there must be a reason why some people do better, other than random causes. The reason people succeed is that they consciously learn and refine what they learn into the best version of what works. They not only do this at the beginning of the chain of causation, but they constantly do it at the end - they look at the results and then determine what needs to be changed, perpetuated, improved, learned - and then they take it back to the beginning: the beliefs and refine them further, into a more and more powerful system of beliefs.
Be aware, por favor, that "beliefs" are not just in the "intangible" emotional world, but that they include the "practical" aspects of life. A belief, generally, is some version of "if X happens, Y will be caused" - "if I do this action, it will cause this result". So, to stretch this concept a bit, beliefs are an expression of a system (which is composed of the steps, in order, that occur to produce a result). (Read the systems discussion piece at the top of Systems Contents, Links.)
So, the belief level includes "systems" that we improve to get better results in a more "systematic" and reliable way.
At that level, rules are also laid out: Do this - so that you will get the result you want. Don't do this, so you can avoid the bad result that occurs from it.
Pete Carroll's includes "no whining, no complaining, no excuses." If one follows that rule, one is inclined toward the Responsibility Mindset (100% Responsibility) of "I am the cause in my life - now what can I do to create better results?" (Whining, complaining, excuses, explaining why it's not your fault - all of those are Victim Mindset behaviors. One must totally, 100%, eliminate those in life. Not doing those behaviors is an action that is totally doable, without difficulty - you just choose it and correct it every time you slip up. See Responsiblity Vs Victimhood.)
Included at that level is "philosophy". So, to succeed, you must develop a life-winning philosophy. (Get the overview at Philosophy Home Page.)
He uses the term "competition", which actually is derived from "working together to produce the best result" and is not based on making someone else lose.
Competition simply means always acting toward excellence (i.e. making life better each chance you get).
Notice that those who succeed and are life champions ALWAYS assertively look at results and then do whatever is necessary to improve on one's ability to get results. (See Living Life As A Champion.)
To the extent that you do this or don't do it, you will succeed IN LIFE, guaranteed. You will, indeed, do The Build in life that guarantees that you will have a great life - it doesn't happen any other way - don't wait for circumstances or other people to create it for you. (See The Principle Of "Building".)
You MUST, if you want to succeed in life, set and follow the rule of "Look at the results, understand them, decide if you want better results, then go about learning and all that is necessary to implement what it takes to get those results." The rule might look like this, abbreviated: "Results I want? Learn and implement to make life work!" Or "Look, see, learn, adjust."
Take 15 minutes, or better yet an hour, and fill in your bottom level (and then, like a true winner, set time to go back and improve it and add detail to it, as this is the core determinant of all of life.
(Note that one who is choosing to be a winner in life would follow the rule of "COMPLETION", where he/she would take everything in this blog piece and decide what to do with it. Discarding it is, of course, a choice (choosing to not act on this piece, is, indeed, the choice to discard it). The other choices are about what to do and how deeply to do it. So you would take each potential action item and list them with due dates or at least a time to decide what to do with these, with a tickler, - and from that you would do the completion that is needed to get the results. Know that people who don't win in life do so because they "stop short" of what it takes to get the desired results - running downfield a bit and stopping before getting to the goal line....)
_______
Notice Carrol's rule of "Be early" in his pyramid below (and consider buying his book, Winning Forever, not as a football book but as a life book - on Amazon it costs a penny plus $3.99 shipping):
Notice that as you refine your beliefs over and over and then practice them you get the most wonderful result (besides actually getting lots of othe good results) of confidence and trust in yourself. And please know that that is one of the four necessary components you must have if you are to have ENDURING HAPPINESS - you cannot achieve happiness without it - so I recommend you create and live your great pyramid!!!
