Why You Think You’re Right - Even If You’re Wrong

(If you received this in email, click on the title to read the rest of this post.)

When we get over this, we find life and our decisions become much, much better.

Why You Think You’re Right - Even If You’re Wrong, Julia Galef (video, 11:43)

Though few who are so committed to being right will actually read this, Michael Shermer discusses it and
makes it so utterly clear in his book, which I’ve summarized at several levels on my site; here’s the basic summary.:

THE BELIEVING BRAIN - KNOW THIS! OR BE THE VICTIM OF IT, FOR LIFE!

Are you a victim of this?

It is interesting to look at people who are on the extremes and justify false conclusions, but ones that can negatively affect the world.   Other than probably not having a bad intent, if they cause deaths are they different than the ignorant intentional killers in terms of their results???  In the real world, it is always the actual results we look to for evaluating an action.  See: Ethics Vs. Morality... which is more valid?...

Three seconds separate those who are wise from those who are reactive...think about it!

"Three seconds separate those who 'give it their all' from those who 'dont give it a thought' - literally.  THREE SECONDS.  This brief buffer is all that stands between those who settle for 'whatever' and those who settle for nothing less than 'whatever it takes'."

Triangulation To Achieve The Best Answer...And Learn More

(If you received this in email, click on the title above to see the entire post!

[Note that this should also be done with any plan that is important!]

Awhile back I was asked to give my opinion of one of those conspiracy (or false cause) issues.  I reviewed the article that “proved” it was right.  I found it to be more conjecture trying to support conjecture and not at all evidence-based in any stretch of the imagination.

When the person advocated other equally spurious beliefs, I did make a few comments, and then offered to be a sounding board for the person before the person actually comes to his/her final decision and started putting it out there to affect other people.

The answer: A definite “No.”

Though I might not have been the right person to work with that person, the simple method of open-mindedly seeking the inputs of knowledgeable people will lead most often to the best answer rather than the answer that one has come to without fully thinking it out.

From Ray Dalio, one of the very most successfully people on the planet, and a good human being, I recommend that you follow his principle of triangulation to be sure you have your best answer (and use his free, no strings attached “Principles” app in order to be smarter about living a life based on the principles that ACTUALLY WORK!

A Deep Dive Into Questioning Our Beliefs, For The Betterment Of Our Lives And The World

Though not exactly fitting those people who follow this blog, this piece is a great illustration of the deep dive into questioning one's belief system, in a way that can dramatically improve one's life, personal effectiveness, and ability to change the outside world for the better.

From my post in Facebook:

"Whether you are of a particular political party, religion, or any belief system or culture, diving deep into questioning and upgrading our beliefs can create life changing results in one's life.

Here is a brilliant deep dive into questioning the culture of this fellow's "community" belief system - one where this type of thinking applies to any belief system. It goes far deeper than the title might suggest, down to the core of what allowed this to happen."

(The title might better be How Otherwise Conscious People Descend Into Causing Damage To The World. It breaks the 5 Worldview Weaknesses of this community into a profound examinations, and direct confrontation, of the beliefs that need to be upgraded!)

The most beneficial book I ever read (and studied)

One person (on Facebook) has asked us to post each day for 10 days a book that has been one of the greatest books affecting my life.

This book is hands down the most beneficial of them all - a simple short book, which I put into practice every day for about 3 months until it was emblazoned in my mind and part of me I, like others I've communicated to me about this, have found it to be the most impactful book I've ever encountered (even though I read this decades ago and have since then read 1,000's of books and written extensively on this area of healthy thinking, which is what this book actually teaches!).

I thought it was so good that I later bought out all the copyrights and posted it for no cost (and no email required!) for you to access.

Building Self-Esteem, L.S. Barksdale

Please be sure to write me about what you get out of it.

IS SPIRITUALITY AND CRITICAL THINKING AN EITHER/OR?

I have noticed that some of the personal growth, spirituality seekers get caught up in beliefs that seem spiritually comforting but keep them away from operating on what really works in life.  And I hate to see them sell themselves short on life.

Of course, most of us hold ourselves as fully being in reality - with our beliefs being held as "the truth".   But is that really so?

You may want to read and/or passon:  Is Spirituality And Critical Thinking An Either/Or?

The power to control your life - instead of the current circumstances.

The Power To Control Your Life, Tony Robbins (Video, 9:19) (I changed the title) - Most people let circumstances dictate their lives and how they feel, but you have the power to go beyond that.  (I’ll be putting out some materials on this shortly, in an attempt to totally alter the way you look at life and to dump your fears and anxieties totally - it will significantly change the way you look at and deal with things.  As you may know, I never charge for anything, so there is no monetary incentives for me. If you want to be notified when they come out, please get on the mailing list for this blog.)

Wisdom from the proven wisest - likely to be of benefit!

This type of thinking is good for everybody...

I copied this post from facebook:

Sometimes your stagnation is the result of a mistake: You didn’t negotiate a deal in the best way and you can’t stop mentally kicking yourself about it.

You’re not alone. And it’s okay to look for advice!

We can all benefit from the wisdom and experience of someone who has successfully overcome and is thriving.

I have been that person for many top-tier leaders over the years.

Here’s what renowned author, businessman, and speaker, Stephen Covey had to say about working with me:

“A mother lode of timely, hard-earned, bite-size, street-smart golden nuggets...invaluable for job seekers, employed or unemployed.”

If you want to take your career – and life – to the next level, hone your leadership skills and elevate your business skills, I can help.

My new video training will help you avoid the two biggest mistakes leaders make that can cost their organizations millions.

I’ll also cover:

How the top 1% in the world start & finish their day.
A simple mindset shift that will 2X your productivity.
How to negotiate deals, raises and anything in life.

Remember, the biggest room in the world is the room for improvement.

Join me on this no-cost video training that will help you be the legend you were meant to be.

The most important portal to a great life!

(If you receive this by email, click on the title to see the entire post.)

Many, many people do not make the relatively simple distinction between "knowing", as a personal reality, and what is actually true.  Until the distinction is made, we as human beings will keep on making the same egregious errors in our lives.

See the section on the two types of truth in True Thinking - The Most Important Link To A Great Life.

Before going forward on a big decision on anything, consider this...

We let ourselves see only a part of the complete picture, especially when things are glamorized (entrepreneurship) or villainized (working for others).
Hopefully, you’ll heed this advice and use good solid thinking and evidence to make all your key decisions.  Read the attached piece on “thinking” in a way that works!!!!

“A stupid decision that works out well becomes a brilliant decision in hindsight.”

— Daniel Kahneman

”Beware of advice from the successful.”

— Barnaby James
”Don’t go to college.  It is a lousy education.”
“Follow your heart.  Don’t be ‘reasonable’!”
“Almost every single generic presentation for startups starts with “Ninety Five percent of all startups fail”, but very rarely do we pause for a moment and think “what does this really mean?” We nod our heads in somber acknowledgement and with great enthusiasm turn to the heroes who “made it” — Zuckerberg, Gates, etc. to absorb pearls of wisdom and find the Holy Grail of building successful companies. Learning from the successful is a much deeper problem and can reduce the probability of success more than we might imagine.“

Read this 3 minute article: Survivorship Bias:  The Tale Of Forgotten Failures - One of the thinking models that we should all know (from the great thinker Shane Parrish!)

Success will come when you rise above intuition and “not knowing”

Intuition is fairly often not accurate and can be damaging, yet people continue to irrationally (without thinking)) believe in the great myth of it being accurate/true/right.

Read this, by two of the greatest experts in the field (and displace the lack of knowledge included in many of the personal development materials):

Noble laureates Daniel Kahneman And Herbert Simon On Intuition.

If we don't question this, we cannot possibly master life...

At Mindvalley, we say we should question the culturescape and the brules, so...with that, consider this hypothetical discussion:

“How dare you question magical thinking!”

“But isn’t this a university, a platform for inquiry and better solutions?”

“But, you A-hole, you’re questioning my cherished beliefs that are part of my identity/safety!”

“No, I’m questioning the basis for how they are brought about.  Choose whatever you choose, but I want you to choose well, for your greater benefit!”

“I’m suggesting that we ought to at least look at this and see how much it could change our lives and our personal power if we did really look at this with our greatest tool.

I’m suggesting that the path to mastery must include this or you can never live the potential life that you are capable of.

Consider this (excerpted from the linked piece I suggest you read):

WE MAKE UP STUFF, SKIP THINKING STEPS, AND THEN...

1.  The "believing human brain" makes stuff up (there's an evolutionary reason why it does so)
2.  And then we believe it as truth (also for an evolutionary reason).
3.  And then it "skips steps", to take shortcuts (also for an evolutionary reason).

Yes, in certain things, this way of processing (in a "non-thinking" way)  works to our benefit, BUT...

"FAIRY TALES" DO NOT ALWAYS SERVE US WELL...

...BUT often it works to our detriment - where it really matters!

For important stuff in life that doesn't fit caveman days, we must however not believe what is made up nor skip the steps to arrive at what to believe in and how to utilize it in our lives.

We cannot make good decisions nor manage our lives well based on bad facts and "non-thinking" (defaulting to primitive brain automaticity).

Don't fall into these traps!  Recognize them. Then correct the key beliefs (facts) that matter to what is true, using the higher brain in the process.  Then use reasoning to decide what to do and how to use the corrected means to getting what you want in life.

Questioning The Culturescape, The Very Beliefs That We Are “Taught”

Vishen spoke yesterday of the fifth ability to enable being superhuman (at work, but likely all of life):  Step Beyond The Culturescape.

We discussed it briefly and perhaps this further discussion may increase that understanding.
